“Send him to a place with good water and grass,
prevent illness and ensure he do not starve to death.”
-The veritable records of King Sejong, 14th March, 1421-
These words written in the center of the exhibition space are King Sejong’s command. Embracing the profound meaning, artist Oum Jeongsoon is visualizing the significance even after 600 years. This creature, almost touching the ceiling with its immense size, appears neither entirely like an elephant nor something else. It seems extremely strange due to the absence of its trunk. This work, which lacks the trunk, the symbol of an elephant is titled <The Elephant without a Trunk>(2022), received the 'Park Seobo Art Award' at the 2023 Gwangju Biennale. In this gallery transformed into a savanna within the urban landscape, visitors embark on a journey through a different spatiotemporal realm guided by the elephant."
With many questions in mind, I embark on a journey that transcends time and space with the series <Timeless Landscape-over 600 years>, An elephant with motion blur takes the lead. The 10 artworks measuring are not hanging on the wall, but rather set in a wavering pattern across the exhibition space, giving the sensation of wandering through a forest. The artist used a steady shutter speed to convey a consistent sense of time and space. Panning photography or motion blur using slow shutter speeds creates a sense of speed and rapidly returns time to the past.
After completing the space-time walk in <Timeless landscape-over 600 years> and heading back toward <Elephant Without a Trunk>, you will end up in a grassland full of ‘water’ and ‘grass.’ The audience is fully engaged in the series of <An Elephant Walk-To the place where clean water and grass>. Since the work is the size of an elephant, taking a step closer to it makes you feel like you are in a grassland, and taking a step back allows you see an elephant.
Artist Oum Jeongsoon now speaks about the <Hidden whisper> audibly in the visual ways through <Elephant without a trunk>. Elephants communicate at a low frequency of 8 Hz, thus humans cannot hear their whispers. Humans believe they are all living in the same space-time from their perspective, but they are trapped within the frame of mind.
Oum Jeongsoon sees "deficiency" through her eyes and reflects it to her works. There are a lot of margins in her works. Oriental painters have emphasized invisible blank spaces since ancient times. While drawing the orchids, it emphasized on the invisible ‘phoenix eye (鳳眼)’. In modern aesthetics, the concept of 'Deficiency' in the Western tradition is being reinterpreted, and new aesthetic values are being created through imperfection, absence, and destructive elements.
Oum Jeongsoon’s paintings, sculptures, and installations are all shaking. As a “Visual artist” she challenges the most fundamental concept of ‘seeing’. Oum Jeongsoon prefers the term ‘shaking’ rather than ‘movement’. ‘Movement’ conveys the nuance of precise, quantitative, and mechanical movement, while ‘shaking’ appears to be a complicated blend of uncertainty, vagueness and emotional overlap. <Timeless landscape-over 600 Years>, we cannot separate the scenery, gaze, elephants, light, wind, scent, etc. This is reality. Being alive means that life is ‘shaking’. Because it is subjected to shaking, as it is an artist's work, it is carried out in a " deformation”(défiguration) rather than complete shape.
All living things are constantly changing and developing beyond their set identities. 'Sense' is also ambiguous and imprecise because it refers to a manner of experiencing and interpreting the environment, rather than a single bodily sense. We face uncertainty, feel harmed, and are always "shaken" because we do not settle for fixed truths or ideas but instead constantly expand the limits of our thinking.
